Solar projects for sale in Sicily: an island market with its own grid logic

Sicily combines some of the strongest solar resource in Italy with an island grid that shapes every investment decision. Pipeline.Solar sends confidential teasers on Sicilian projects only to registered investors whose criteria match.

Why investors look at solar investment in Sicily, Italy

Sicily is usually on the shortlist of anyone building a southern Italian portfolio. Irradiation is high across most of the island, the territory is large and varied, and local developers and EPC contractors know the municipalities and permitting offices well. Sites range from inland plateaux to areas near industrial zones and former quarries.

The resource alone does not make a project bankable, however. In Sicily the quality of a deal depends above all on the grid connection and on how the site fits the regional framework.

The grid question: why the connection matters even more on the island

Sicily is an island system linked to the mainland transmission network, and in several areas the local grid has received a large volume of connection requests. In practice this means that two projects with similar land and similar permits can have very different value depending on the connection solution. When reviewing a Sicilian teaser, look closely at:

  • whether the STMG has been accepted and with which network operator (Terna or the local distributor);
  • the cost of the STMG and the works required on the grid side;
  • the estimated days to connection, which in Sicily often reflect grid reinforcements rather than plant construction;
  • whether shared works with other producers are foreseen.

Our guide to STMG and TICA explains how to read these fields.

Storage and hybrid projects as a Sicilian theme

Because the island grid has to balance a high share of variable renewables, battery storage is a recurring topic for Sicilian investors. Some investors look for standalone BESS projects in Sicily, others for solar plants designed to host storage on the same connection. Terna runs the MACSE mechanism for long-term procurement of storage capacity, which is part of the context an investor considers, although each project has to be assessed on its own connection and authorisation.

Land, suitable areas and agrivoltaics

Large parts of Sicily are agricultural. Since the DL 63/2024 restricted ground-mounted solar on agricultural land, the most relevant sites are those within the exceptions (quarries, mines, areas near industrial zones and other cases provided for) and agrivoltaic configurations where permitted. The regional discipline on suitable areas adds another layer that affects procedure and timing. Check whether land rights are held in surface rights (DDS) or through a purchase, and whether the agreements are already registered.

Which stages you can search for in Sicily

You can set Sicily for any of the four stages: greenfield co-development with milestone payments, RTB solar projects in Sicily and turnkey plants, brownfield plants built and waiting for connection, and COD plants with production history. Opportunities depend on the projects available at the time, so no stage or size can be promised in advance.

How to set Sicily in your search criteria

After a short introductory call you receive a personal link to the reserved area. There you select Sicily among your regions, the stages of interest, the minimum and maximum capacity of the single plant, the technologies and the deal structures you accept. When a project in Sicily matches, the staff checks the data and sends you a teaser from deal@pipeline.solar. Request investor access or write to us on WhatsApp to start.

Frequently asked questions

Are there always solar projects for sale in Sicily?

No. Opportunities depend on the projects available at the time. If you set Sicily in your criteria, you receive a teaser only when a compatible project enters the pipeline.

Can I receive both solar and BESS projects in Sicily?

Yes. In the reserved area you can select several technologies, including ground-mounted solar, agrivoltaics, standalone BESS and hybrid projects, and combine them with Sicily as a region.

Who carries out due diligence on a Sicilian project?

Due diligence is carried out by the investor and its advisors. Pipeline.Solar performs a preliminary screening of the data and makes documents available in the data room after the NDA.
